Suspended Tonali hit with 50 new betting charges while at Newcastle

More athlete gambling news as it has been reported that Sandro Tonali, a midfielder for Newcastle United, has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for placing bets on matches while he was with the Premier League team. Tonali had already been serving a 10-month ban for betting on matches involving his former clubs, AC Milan and Brescia. This new charge could result in another lengthy suspension for the player, who Newcastle United signed for £55 million.

“It’s alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023,” the FA said.

Admitted to problems

The 23-year-old, who’s admitted to having a gambling addiction, has until April 5 to respond to the charges. Newcastle said Tonali “continues to fully comply with relevant investigations” and “retains the club’s full support.”

The Italian Football Association initially banned Tonali on Oct. 26, and FIFA later approved its request to apply the suspension worldwide. That forced him to withdraw from all competitive football matches. That includes those with Newcastle and the Italian national team, ruling him out of Euro 2024.

Can still train

Tonali has been allowed to train with the first team until his ban expires. In November, reports surfaced that the FA had launched an investigation into allegations that Tonali bet on matches after joining Newcastle. It’s unclear at this time whether those games involved the Magpies.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has recently returned to action after serving an eight-month ban for 232 violations of the FA’s betting rules. Toney was also diagnosed with a gambling addiction.
