‘Coach Prime’ is Sports at its Finest

Spread the love

This article may not be the first of its kind. It definitely won’t be the last. Especially after what I just witnessed.

I am 26 years old and know who Deion Sanders is, but I didn’t experience Neon Deion at its apex. I’ve been told that he was a 2-sport superstar. I thought it was cool what he was doing at Jackson State. I kind of had a grasp on the magnitude of him going to Colorado with 58 highly touted recruits. After this game I watched, I think I get the hype.

If you had told me even a year ago that a game between (0-1) Colorado State and (2-0) Colorado would’ve been must-see TV even starting at 10:00pm EST, I might have asked you “in what alternate universe?”

Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell gave coach (and NFL Hall of Famer) Deion Sanders and Colorado some ‘bulletin board material’ by saying that he was raised with more respect than to wear a hat and sunglasses (Deion’s style) at press conferences. I still wasn’t convinced.

ESPN traveled to Boulder, CO for its ever-popular College Football GameDay. That didn’t convince me.

Stuck watching the Florida upset of Tennessee way later than it should’ve been airing (thanks to Vols coach Josh Huepel), we all saw the pregame beef highlights going on between CSU and CU. Yet, I still was not convinced.

Convinced of what, you may ask? That we’re witnessing a moment in sports that will go down in lore. A tale you’ll tell your grandkids.

Colorado State at Colorado was a must-see TV. Even Eastern time zone folks were watching ‘PAC12 After Dark.’ This was captivating.

What’s more insane to me is that I actually was kind of mad at Deion for not controlling his team talking trash every week. But whether or not you are rooting for this team’s success, the entire concept of it all is mesmerizing. You can’t turn away or you’ll be forced to watch replays.

Deion Sanders, his two sons, and those 58 transfers have made this such a national story, even Colorado State was benefitting from this nationally televised spectacle.

We were introduced to guys we might’ve never heard from again if it weren’t for this game.

This moment reminds me of the following:

  • Magic vs Bird
  • The Last Dance
  • Kobe & Shaq
  • 2004 Red Sox
  • Miracle On Ice
  • Brady to the Buccaneers
  • LeBron’s decision to play in Miami
  • Kevin Durant forming a super team
  • Jeremy ‘Linsanity’
  • Johnny Manziel

This stuff is legend. It’s carvings on ancient walls. Those “you had to be there” moments. The kind of story that makes you realize why you’re a sports fan: pure entertainment.

I know, the Buffs are only 3-0. They have not played much fierce competition. Of their games remaining, they still have to go against Oregon, USC, and Utah. A schedule they might not survive unblemished.

I’m just happy to know that during this ever-polarizing moment, as bad as the NIL and transfer portal is… I’m witnessing sports history. It’s a break from the political nightmare in today’s world. A time to relax and yet still be on the edge of your seat.

We don’t know what the future holds for College Football and this borderline Free Agency. We have no clue if Colorado loses five games. There is nobody that can tell us for a fact that Deion won’t go to the NFL in a couple of years.

What I do know is that I’m tuned into Colorado University football. To that I say, I respect ya Deion. You got me excited for Prime Time. I love sports…
