Good for the game?

Absolutely! The NLL has been starving for that spark in fan interest for 36 years of existence. The new NLL schedule is a unique and fresh development that evens the playing field. As previously stated, the NLL is doing something that fans of the NBA have been in favor of for a few years now. Commissioner Brett Frood says “The revamped standings … provide … fiercely competitive method of determining our playoff teams.” He adds that it “maximize(s) fan and partner engagement across the league.

Reminder that Brett Frood comes from the world of NASCAR where he brought in hundreds of millions of dollars in sponsors for Tony Stewart’s race team. The NLL needs outside money to grow much higher than its current state. This new format apparently opens the door for that money.

How fans feel

The following Tweets/posts are from people NOT affiliated with the league directly, so their opinion is unbiased:

“One interesting season!”

“Yawn”

“Unified Standings is really tough”

“East has been deeper”

“Geographic alignments outdated”

Conclusion

Change is always polarizing regardless of the sports league. This is exciting news for the NLL and its fans, both new and long time. Of course, time will only tell how fast the box game grows from this point.
