Jacque Vaughn is out

As we talk about a lot on this network, coaches have a small window in pro sports. Sometime, that window closes in mid-season. The Nets decided to fire their head coach today. “This was an incredibly difficult decision, but one we feel is in the best interest of the team going forward,” said general manager Sean Marks, according to the New York Post’s Brian Lewis.

An interim coach will be appointed by the 21-33 Nets in the near future, as Jacque Vaughn has been relieved of his duties.

Last year, Vaughn led the team to a playoff berth and a 43-32 record while serving as the head coach in Brooklyn. This was his second season in charge.
Since 2016, the 49-year-old has been associated with the franchise. He was initially hired as an assistant coach and later promoted to the head coach position when Steve Nash was fired seven games into the 2022-23 season. Vaughn also served as the interim coach in 2020 when Kenny Atkinson was terminated.

Vaughn has a career record of 129-226 as a head coach. He’s worked with both the Nets and the Orlando Magic.

Although Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas have had promising seasons, Brooklyn has struggled to find its rhythm. Despite starting the season with a 13-10 record, the Nets have only won eight of their last 31 games. Additionally, the team ranks in the bottom half of the league in both offense and defense and doesn’t have a top-30 scorer.
