Handicapping Games Becoming Difficult With Parity

It’s the Monday morning after week 3, and I am licking my wounds from the college football gambling dilemma I find myself in. These games are becoming increasingly difficult to handicap when teams like Alabama are tied 3-3 deep into the 3rd quarter with South Florida, a team they were favored by 34 points over. It didn’t stop with Alabama, Colorado also made a mess of being a heavy favorite, as well as many others.

Let’s see how we fared on our bets this week.

#14 Kansas State (-4; -180) @ Missouri – K-State won 40-12 last year and had a much more impressive resume coming into this game. Missouri had lackluster games against an FCS opponent and a lower-tier FBS team, yet their 61-yard field goal now has some pundits claiming they are SEC royalty. Kansas State couldn’t stop the passing of Mizzou, and couldn’t stop my pain as my parlay died an early death.

Colorado State @#18 Colorado (-24) – Neon’s sunglasses couldn’t help my parlay at this point, but at least they could’ve given my confidence a boost. Unfortunately, Deion had to learn the hard way that FBS rivalry games are rarely easy affairs. Colorado State was in it to win it, luckily for the Buffs, their talent pushed them through for the overtime win.

#7 Penn State (-15; -664) @ Illinois – Hey look, my five-team parlay actually got one right. As expected, Penn State’s defense kept Illinois in check, and eventually, the offense started putting points up (24 points after the 1st quarter). I predicted a 17-point win and that was the exact margin. Small victories fill the cracks of my gambling pain.

Syracuse (-2.5) @ PurdueOh Purdue, why do I bet on you? My alma matter seems to always let me down on the football field. An opening drive looked promising until a red zone fumble, then a late-game extra point miss sealed the deal. The ‘Cuse got us again, 35-20.

#3 Florida State (-26.5) @ Boston CollegeI almost laid the 26 points, almost. While writing the article, I changed my mind and went with the safe bet of the Over. This will be a lesson I learn from, forget your gut and think about it before pulling the trigger.

My Record this week: 2-3 (gross)

Check-in later this week for my next parlay, hopefully, it’s not a debacle!
