Michigan football team, led by veteran coach Jim Harbaugh, has been knocking on the door to reach the pinnacle of college football for years. The Wolverines had a tough start, losing five consecutive games to their Big Ten rival Ohio State. However, they managed to break through and have now won three consecutive games against the Buckeyes. On Monday, they overcame two setbacks in the CFP semifinals and beat a red-hot Alabama club to reach the title game.
Michigan was one of the top-ranked teams in the nation for most of the season, and they proved it by blanking Iowa 26-0 in the Big Ten Championship Game. They deservedly earned the top overall seed in the four-team playoff. This season, they have the strongest overall team under Harbaugh, with the nation’s top-rated defense and a versatile offense led by quarterback J.J. McCarthy. In the CFP semifinals, Michigan trailed Alabama 20-13 with just three minutes left, but McCarthy led an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to tie the game. In overtime, it was the defense that made the difference as multiple defenders clamped down on Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe during a fourth-and-goal run. The Wolverines have the offense to score on Washington’s below-average defense (414 yards/game; 24.1 points/game), and the stout defense (263 yards/game and 10.2 points/game) to force Washington punts.

Michael Penix Jr. is known for his ability to perform well under pressure, which has been evident since he joined the Washington team from Indiana. This quality has played a significant role in helping the Huskies reach the CFP title game. During the two games against Oregon, he outplayed Bo Nix, who was the favorite for the Heisman award and led scoring drives in the final moments, which secured the victories for Washington. Similarly, he led the team to a win against Oregon State, whose home record was 16-1 before the match. In a game against the rival team, Washington State, Penix led the team on a winning drive that resulted in a game-winning field goal after converting a fourth down deep in the Huskies’ territory.
Therefore, it was no surprise when Penix calmly led a 10-play, 67-yard drive against Texas, resulting in a 27-yard field goal from Grady Gross, and providing a two-score cushion. Texas had driven the length of the field to bring the score to 34-28, and another defensive stop would have put them in the perfect position to win the game with a touchdown drive.
If the Huskies figure out the Wolverine defense, a shootout may take place, which favors Washington.
