A win away from the Hall of Fame, tied for the lead at Blue Bay LPGA

Lydia Ko is a win away from making history on Sunday at the LPGA. By winning one more tournament, she will earn the final point required to secure her induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame. Currently, Ko is tied for the lead at the Blue Bay LPGA tournament. The event is being held at the Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course in China.

On Saturday, she shot a 6-under 66, bringing her into a tie with Bailey Tardy (66) and Sarah Schmelzel (69), with only 18 holes left to play. Ko, who has won 20 times on the LPGA, needs just one more victory to meet the minimum threshold for induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame. If she wins on Sunday, she will become the youngest player ever to be inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame, at just 26 years of age.

Plenty of golf left

“Still a lot of golf to be played. It seems like someone shoots a really low score at least one of the rounds,” Ko said. “We all know the pin positions dictate the scores. I just got to stay patient and keep giving myself good looks and see where that puts me.”

Ko had a round with five birdies, an eagle, and one bogey. Tardy played with Ko and scored four birdies along with an eagle with a clean scorecard.

Records being broken

Meanwhile, after a player tied the course record in each of the first two rounds, Canadian Savannah Grewal set a new one on Saturday, shooting 8-under 64.

“Feels kind of surreal. Still soaking it all in,” she said. “Just wanted to come out and play my best. I was joking with my brother yesterday that I shot 2 over that today is moving day. I got it.”

On Sunday, the spotlight will be on Ko, who came close to securing the final point earlier this season. Having emerged victorious at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions at the beginning of the year, she was defeated in a playoff by Nelly Korda at the LPGA Drive On Championship the following week. In China, on Sunday, Ko has the opportunity to create LPGA history.
