Is Harbaugh going to the Chargers? Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who won college football’s top prize a week ago, is exploring the possibility of returning to the NFL.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers announced that they had interviewed Jim Harbaugh, who has been coaching Michigan since 2015 and hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2014. After that 8-8 season with the San Francisco 49ers, Harbaugh and the team mutually parted ways. Despite the cheating scandal earlier this season, Harbaugh is still highly respected at Michigan.

The Chargers are facing a dire need to bring in a coach with a proven record to restructure the organization. Harbaugh has the qualities they are looking for, but he hasn’t made a decision yet.
The Chargers are the first team to interview Harbaugh, but he will have several other options since there are seven available head coach openings. Jim Harbaugh is the brother of John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s hard to fathom many teams passing on Harbaugh, but perhaps he will pass on offers. The NCAA seems to be eventually forcing his hand. After an initial suspension for recruiting violations and unauthorized practices, the Michigan coach was then accused of conspiring to illegally scout opponents.

The Big Ten handed down a suspension, but rumors are the NCAA may be coming with a bigger stick. After losing legendary Alabama coach Nick Saban, the college ranks may be losing another household name in coaching.

Back to Prominence

Harbaugh is 89-25 at Michigan, including three Big Ten titles in a row, and now their first National Championship since 1997. Harbaugh will have plenty of options. The Titans, Commanders, Chargers, Panthers, Raiders (maybe not as open as others), Falcons, and Seahawks are all searching for new coaches.

Given Harbaugh’s knack for rebuilding, and winning everywhere he goes, he seems like a prime candidate for all those teams. And given that the NCAA has him in the crosshairs, they all may seem like great options to the coach. I’d say the only thing making his decision difficult is if he wants to leave his Alma Matter.
