Awake and responsive Thursday in a Toledo, Ohio, hospital

Former UFC legend and Hall of Famer, Mark Coleman, is currently in a Toledo hospital and is awake and responsive after surviving a house fire earlier this week. In a recently posted Instagram video, the 59-year-old hugged his two daughters and expressed that he was the “happiest man in the world”. According to his family, Coleman rescued his parents from a fire at his childhood home in Ohio on Tuesday but unfortunately suffered from smoke inhalation and had to be airlifted to the hospital. Tragically, Coleman’s dog, Hammer, died in the fire.

“I’m so lucky,” Coleman said in the video. “Can’t believe my parents are alive. I had to make a decision because I got out of my room and went to the door and it was already horrible. I couldn’t breathe. Almost had to go outside. I went back in and got them. I can’t believe it.”

Kenzie, the daughter of Mark Coleman, announced that her father, a former fighter, is now breathing on his own. However, he still has a long road ahead of him in terms of recovery. The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with the expenses related to his treatment. They’ve raised more than $70,000 USD as of Thursday afternoon. Coleman is considered a pioneer in mixed martial arts, having made his debut at UFC 10 in 1996 and becoming the first-ever heavyweight champion. He was inducted into the promotion’s Hall of Fame in 2008.
