Rochdale Head Groundsman Given 6-Week Suspension

It appears soccer is still dealing with problems with racism. The Head Groundsman of Rochdale, Joshua Haigh, has been suspended for six weeks by the FA for an incident of racial abuse towards a broadcaster. The incident took place on February 21st during a match between Rochdale and Stockport County in League Two. Haigh’s abusive conduct was proven to be race-related.

On February 21st, during the League Two game between Rochdale and Stockport County, Rochdale’s head groundsman, Joshua Haigh, was found guilty of an “aggravated breach” of FA Rule E3. Haigh had denied the charge against him. It was found that his conduct included a reference – whether expressed or implied – to race and/or color, making it a serious offense.

Abusive, Insulting, and Improper Conduct

According to an official statement released by the FA, Haigh had been accused of abusive, insulting, and improper conduct towards a member of the media during the game. These are all violations of Rule E3.1. Additionally, it was alleged that his behavior constituted an “aggravated breach” as it included a reference, whether expressed or implied, to race and/or color – which is defined in FA Rule E3.2.

An independent Regulatory Commission subsequently found Haigh guilty of the charge against him and imposed a six-week suspension from all football and football-related activity. This includes a stadium suspension for the matchday of any Rochdale fixture during that time. He was also required to undergo face-to-face education and was issued a warning regarding his future conduct.
