NASCAR catches Logano wearing an amphibious-like glove

Logano was caught cheating. NASCAR presented on Saturday a modified glove that Joey Logano used during qualifying at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The alterations were so obvious that the glove appeared to be part of an amphibious costume, designed to deflect aerodynamics. The black glove was worn on Logano’s left hand and had webbing made of an unspecified material between every finger. It is believed that Logano, who secured the second position in Atlanta, had the glove modified to allow him to place his hand out of the window and use it as an aerodynamic blocker during qualifying last weekend.

No rival tips

NASCAR officials refused to speculate on the reason behind the actions of the two-time Cup champion or Team Penske during the event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday. Logano did not appeal the penalty imposed on him. A random inspection by NASCAR revealed the glove, and not a tipoff from a rival team, as Denny Hamlin had suggested.

It is unclear if Logano wore the glove when he won the pole for the season-opening Daytona 500. Brad Moran, managing director of the NASCAR Cup Series, stated that officials selected five cars for post-qualifying inspection, and the in-car camera alerted officials of an anomaly in the No. 22 Ford.

“We spotted something that was honestly concerning,” Moran said ahead of Saturday’s activity in Las Vegas. “As you can see, the entire glove is webbed. The reason for that is you can block more air, the drivers do put their hand up against the (window) opening, which we’ve never really had a rule against.

“This goes one step further, and that glove becomes not only a competition problem but it goes one step further because it becomes a safety violation.”

Equipment has to be approved prior to use

All racing equipment used in NASCAR races must be approved by The SFI Foundation Inc., which is a non-profit organization responsible for ensuring the quality assurance of specialty performance and racing equipment since 1978. However, NASCAR was uncertain about the fire retardancy of the material used in creating the webbing effect.

Last Sunday, Logano was penalized and had to forfeit his second-place starting position, dropping him to the back of the field at Atlanta. Furthermore, he was required to serve a drive-through penalty on pit road once the green flag was waved, as a competition penalty.

Logano has been fined $10,000 this week for violating NASCAR’s safety code under “Driver Responsibilities & Driver Protective Clothing/Equipment.”
