Ohio State fires Chris Holtmann

After several big leads squandered away, and a lackluster season, Chris Holtmann is out at Ohio State.

According to a source informed by Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68, OSU has fired head coach Chris Holtmann, after being with the program for parts of seven seasons. The Buckeyes had a difficult season with a record of 4-10 in Big Ten play and 14-11 overall.

In 2017, OSU hired Holtmann to replace long-time head coach Thad Matta. Holtmann had previously led the Butler Bulldogs to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance during the 2016-17 season.

Holtmann’s Buckeyes tenure started strong, with four NCAA Tournament appearances in his first five seasons. He was also awarded the 2017-18 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award. However, the Buckeyes never made it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament under Holtmann’s leadership.
