Kirk Cousins agrees to deal with Falcons, ending era with Vikings

Cousins is going to the Falcons. Kirk Cousins has faced criticism for his inability to win significant games or lead his teams in deep playoff runs. Nevertheless, he remains a valuable player in the NFL as an experienced and productive quarterback. However, he will no longer be playing for the Minnesota Vikings.

Multiple media outlets, including ESPN’s Adam Schefter, report that Cousins has agreed to join the Atlanta Falcons. This move has been speculated for a few days, and with the new head coach Raheem Morris, the Falcons will benefit from an upgraded quarterback.

The Ca$h

The Atlanta Falcons and Cousins have reportedly agreed to a four-year deal, although the signing can only take place on Wednesday. The quarterback has been able to negotiate a massive contract, worth $180 million, featuring a $50 million signing bonus and $100 million guaranteed, according to Tom Pelissero from NFL Media. This deal should hopefully lead Cousins towards some playoff success and earn him more respect in the league.

Plenty of experience

Kirk Cousins has been a consistent performer in the NFL with good stats throughout his career. He spent six seasons with the Vikings and put up impressive numbers, throwing for 23,265 yards and 171 touchdowns, earning three Pro Bowl selections. He also played six solid seasons with the Washington Commanders before becoming a free agent.

However, some people still criticized him despite his consistent performance. Recently, the Minnesota Vikings couldn’t come to an agreement with Cousins, and their general manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, thanked him for his contributions and stated that a new contract could not be found that aligns with both their long and short-term goals.

Coming off an injury

Cousins had a great season last year until he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in a game against the Green Bay Packers. This raised questions about his future, as his contract with the Vikings ended and he became a free agent. Being a quarterback nearing 36 years of age and recovering from a major injury, his future is uncertain. However, the Falcons, in particular, have an ideal situation for Cousins to join.

Weapons

Former head coach Arthur Smith faced criticism for not utilizing his top players on offense effectively, despite the Falcons having many talented players in their team. Bijan Robinson was a highly-rated running back draft pick, Drake London was a reliable No. 1 receiver, and Kyle Pitts became one of only two rookie tight ends in NFL history to record 1,000 yards.

Unfortunately, they were held back by a poor quarterback and a coach who was unwilling to use them properly. With the hiring of Morris, the coaching situation has changed, as has the quarterback. It is hoped that Cousins can bring out the best in his teammates, but he must first prove his fitness. If he can replicate his form from last season before his injury, the entire offense could benefit. Given the lack of strength in the NFC South division, the Falcons could claim the title if Cousins performs well.

Cousins’ performance during this, his third and likely final NFL stop, will significantly impact his legacy, whether positively or negatively.
