Charlie Woods, the 15-year-old son of golf legend Tiger, will start his attempt to qualify for a first PGA Tour event on Thursday

Charlie Woods is qualifying for his first PGA Event.

Charlie Woods is set to participate in one of the four pre-qualifiers in an attempt to secure a spot in the Cognizant Classic. In Monday’s final qualifier, the top 25 players and ties will advance, with four players earning a place in the main field.

The PGA National in Florida will host Rory McIlroy and other top players, who will compete for a prize fund of £7.1m. To join the Northern Irishman, Charlie Woods must first pass the 18-hole pre-qualifier at Lost Lake Golf Club. He is grouped with Ireland’s Ruaidhri McGee and American Olin Browne Jr.

Dad is Caddy

Players will progress to the final qualifier at Tesoro Club’s Palmer Course to earn their spot at the Cognizant Classic, which will be held from 29 February to 3 March. The PNC Championship exhibition event has featured teenage Woods in the last four editions, alongside his father who withdrew due to illness during the Genesis Invitational last week. Charlie Woods, with Tiger acting as his caddie, finished tied 17th in the boys’ 14-15 division of last year’s Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship.

LIV in the Masters

Joaquin Niemann of LIV Golf is one of the three players who have received a special invitation to play in the Masters in early April. The 25-year-old Chilean was ranked 18th in the world when he joined the breakaway tour, which does not earn ranking points, and is the 13th LIV golfer in the Masters field. Augusta National has also granted invitations to Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen and Ryo Hisatsune, a 21-year-old who is the first Japanese player to win the European Tour Rookie of the Year award.
