Massive alligator lunges at golfers along cart path in Florida

An Alligator lunges at golfers in Florida. A golf cart driver got the shock of a lifetime when he almost ran over an alligator that instantly expressed its displeasure over the encounter. A homeowner in the community caught the whole thing on video.

Denise Prues had spotted the alligator walking between two homes toward a pond behind the houses when the encounter took place. Alligators are no strangers to Florida and have often been spotted in swimming pools and even on porches.

In February 2023, an 85-year-old woman on Florida’s East Coast was killed by an alligator who attacked her and her dog from a community pond not that different from the recent encounter.

Driver didn’t see the gator

On February 16, while in Ave Maria, near Fort Myers, Prues heard a sound in her side yard and saw an alligator walking between two houses, proceeding towards a pond behind the houses. The path used by golf carts was located between the houses and the pond. One driver didn’t spot the alligator, while the second one was unfortunate. In the video, the alligator can be seen accelerating as it approaches the path in front of the golf cart. The driver quickly swerved to avoid the alligator, which jumped towards the cart. Prues could be heard exclaiming, “Oh my god!” behind the camera.

Living with Alligators in Florida

The Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates that there are approximately 1.3 million alligators of various sizes in Florida, even though the exact population is unknown. Alligators are found in all 67 counties in Florida. These reptiles are opportunistic feeders and will consume any readily available animal. Their preference is to hunt for prey that they can overpower easily, according to the FWC.
